A Future of Design; Sustainable Design

You may have heard of sustainable design before, but do you know what it is? According to GSA, Sustainable Design is defined as "a design that seeks to reduce negative impacts on the environment".

As the issues of climate change is getting serious, many designers are realizing the importance of sustainability, and started to incorporate it into their designs. For example, Adidas designed an ocean trainer shoes which are made from plastics found in the sea. IKEA also released a Kungsbacka Kitchen Units made from recycled plastic bottles and reclaimed industrial wood.

Today I want to introduce a fashion brand called Reformation. Reformation is a women's fashion brand with sustainability at the core of their designs. They are carbon free, and water-neutral. According to their websites, they are "partnered with water restoration program Bonneville Environmental Foundation(BEF) to restore the water we do use, and balance our entire water footprint."

Although many industries are starting to take actions to save the environment, there are still many flaws that we must overcome. First of all, sustainable design can be very exclusive, and pricy. Since it takes much more work, time, and materials to make a sustainable product, it makes the product expensive which makes it hard for most people to purchase. In future, sustainable design should be reachable for anyone, so that everyone can have an option to choose to be sustainable.
